Highlighted Aboriginal Initiatives

  • Establishment of the most comprehensive designated seats program for Aboriginal students of any university in Canada: There are seats in various graduate and undergraduate programs in the following faculties, divisions, and departments: Education, Social Work, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, Business Administration, Human Kinetics and Recreation, Visual Arts, Environmental Policy, and all Marine Institute programs. The seats are protected by the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission. 

 

  • New scholarships for Aboriginal students: the four Dr. Evan Simpson Scholarships and new scholarships in the Faculties of Business Administration and Education. 

 

  • MOU with the College of the North Atlantic to develop an Aboriginal Ambassadors program, which will bring Aboriginal role models in post-secondary education to schools in Aboriginal communities. Administrative systems have been reviewed to facilitate ambassadorial and other Aboriginal initiatives.

 

  • MOU with the St. John's Native Friendship Centre to facilitate joint activities with Memorial's Aboriginal Resource Office and other initiatives.

 

  • MOU with the Nunatsiavut Government that guarantees residence accommodation for Inuit students from remote communities at the Grenfell Campus for the duration of their degree program.

 

  • Establishment of an Aboriginal Resource Centre at the Grenfell Campus.

 

  • Hiring of an Aboriginal Liaison Coordinator on the Grenfell Campus.

 

  • Hiring of a second staff person at the Aboriginal Resource Office on the St. John's Campus, with this and the existing position made permanent.

 

  • Establishment of an Aboriginal Student Council, Siawiti'nej, on the St. John's Campus.

 

  • Establishment of the GCSU Student Aboriginal Committee on the Grenfell Campus.
