Memorial launches oil and gas partnership
Memorial introduced a special initiative designed to transform Newfoundland and Labrador into an internationally recognized leader in education, training, research and development related to all facets of the oil and gas industry. The Oil and Gas Development Partnership, a multi-year initiative that will involve the creation of new academic programs, research projects and facilities, outreach programs and strategic industrial partnerships with the petroleum industry, was announced Sept. 6.
Math student appears on popular game show
Shannon Sullivan is familiar with the pressure of sitting in a hot seat. The 24-year-old graduate student has represented Memorial in Atlantic Canada and international math competitions. As a high school student at Holy Heart in St. John's, Mr. Sullivan was a regular on Trivia Plus, a Cable 9 show for young people. The mathematician's latest venture created a buzz across the campus and the country: he was one of 10 Canadian contestants, and the only one chosen from Atlantic Canada, who participated in a Canadian version of the popular game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and he won $1,000.
Islands forum wraps
As a leader in advanced education and research, it was fitting that Memorial should co-host a forum that saw the gathering of experts, community leaders, educators and students. North Atlantic Forum 2000, an initiative of the North Atlantic Islands Program, was the second in a series of international forums examining innovative approaches to economic development at the community, regional and national levels around the North Atlantic Rim. Held Sept. 24-27, 2000, at Marble Mountain base lodge on Newfoundland's west coast, it brought together government, labour, business, and educational stakeholders from the Åland Islands, Bermuda, Canada, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Malta, Scotland and Sweden. More than 300 delegates attended the forum, titled Opportunities and Action in a Knowledge-driven Economy: New Lessons from the Edge.
