Fisheries department, Memorial sign agreement

Memorial University and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada signed an agreement to establish a strategic alliance. The agreement, signed at the Marine Institute Aug. 7, resulted from extensive discussions between senior managers at DFO and Memorial during the past year. The five-year agreement will formalize the historical relationship between the two organizations and promote opportunities for co-operation administratively and at the working level. DFO and Memorial share many interests in the marine and nautical sciences; they will now share infrastructure and expertise to develop plans for future collaborations.

Recreation complex most comprehensive in Atlantic Canada

All major recreation facilities on Memorial’s St. John’s campus have been integrated into a new complex, offering Atlantic Canada’s most comprehensive recreation package which features recreation and fitness programs and leisure opportunities for students, alumni, employees and the general public.

The complex is comprised of the new $13 million Field House, the swimming pool and Strength and Conditioning Centre in the School of Human Kinetics, the Splash facility at Long Pond, the outdoor playing fields, and the Aquarena. Activities include aerobics and fitness classes, running and walking on the new 200m track, badminton, tennis, swimming, basketball, volleyball and a host of other leisure and recreation options. The Field House will be able to host major sports tournaments, concerts, student events (such as orientation and winter carnival) and public events including trade shows.

The complex is governed by a voluntary board of directors that includes undergraduate and graduate students, other university and community representatives and representation from the City of St. John’s.

Harlow plan approved

The Board of Regents approved the educational, business and renovation plan for Harlow campus, subject to Senate approval of new academic programs. The centrepiece of the new credit offerings is a program in European studies, while the new non-credit offerings include a Gateway Europe course, initially aimed at executives of small and medium-sized businesses in Atlantic Canada, and unique ESL courses for professionals from non-English speaking countries.

Schlumberger Oilfield Services. Headquartered in Paris, the company is the leading provider of services, solutions and technology to the international petroleum industry. This working relationship was developed when President Axel Meisen met with Euan Baird, chairman and CEO of Schlumberger, during an oil and gas conference in Aberdeen last year.
